Nevada County Resources
The towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City abound
in Cornish heritage.
A stamp mill near City Hall in Grass Valley is
dedicated to the Cousin Jacks. It’s directly across the
street from Cousin Jack’s Pasties. Historic markers cite
the names of Cornish merchants. Stained glass windows in the local
churches are inscribed with Cornish names. The historic hotel
includes a Bob Fitzsimmons room. Every year, the Cornish carols
are sung on Mill Street and chime from the tower of the Methodist
Church.
In Nevada City, the A. C. Todd Cornish Studies
Collection at the Doris Foley Library for Historical Research
is the starting point for students of Cornish heritage. The Penzance
Room in City Hall commemorates the bonds between the town and
its sister in Cornwall.
A host of local museums and libraries keep the
heritage alive. When you attend the 2009 gathering, you’ll
have free access to all of them throughout the week: North Star
Powerhouse, Grass Valley; Empire Mine Historic State Park; Fire
House Museum, Nevada City; Nevada County Railroad Museum; Grass
Valley Cultural Center; Searls Historical Library; Doris Foley
Historical Research Library
For other sites that often go unnoticed, take
a historic walking tour of Grass Valley, Nevada City or one of
three pioneer cemeteries. On your own, visit any of the numerous
other historic sites in Nevada County and the California Gold
Country.
